Powerful DRAFTING FOR THETexans

Draft Grade — Texans

The Texans did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. The tape said wait; the Texans did not. Ty'Ron Hopper went at pick No. 128, a good 49 picks before the board was ready. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
Rosemy-Jacksaint falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. It is not that Solomon is a bad player; it is that the Texans had louder needs to answer first.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. Job largely done: running back settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Byron Murphy II
In pick No. 23 they get an anchor for the defensive front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick59
Rnd2
Max Melton
By-the-book stuff, Max Melton at Round 2, Pick 27 squarely in line with his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick86
Rnd3
Javon Solomon
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, offensive lineman and other spots to take Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE that was not the priority.
Pick124
Rnd4
Josh Newton
A surprising call. With edge rusher, offensive lineman and other spots still to address, they spent slot 124 on Josh Newton, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick128
Rnd4
Ty'Ron Hopper
A big swing on Ty'Ron Hopper at the 128th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick236
Rnd7
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint
Taking Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in No. 236 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick245
Rnd7
Blake Watson
Blake Watson at the Round 7 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick250
Rnd7
Tip Reiman
They barely believed it either: Tip Reiman still on the board at the 250th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
