Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Texans.

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Texans reached some 49 spots for Ty'Ron Hopper, and value like that does not grow back. The bottom line is a respectable B-.

The Sainristil pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher, offensive lineman and other spots still on the board. That Sainristil pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with running back chief among the fixes.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Byron Murphy II
In the 23rd overall pick they get a run-stuffing presence up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick59 Rnd2 Max Melton
By-the-book stuff, Max Melton at the 59th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick86 Rnd3 Mike Sainristil
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Mike Sainristil at cornerback with edge rusher, offensive lineman and other spots open.
Pick124 Rnd4 Johnny Wilson
A straight-up fair deal on Johnny Wilson at Round 4, Pick 24, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick128 Rnd4 Ty'Ron Hopper
Value said wait; Ty'Ron Hopper in slot 128 says they were not listening. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick236 Rnd7 Tip Reiman
Tip Reiman at pick 236 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick245 Rnd7 Tyler Owens
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tyler Owens at Round 7, Pick 25. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick250 Rnd7 Blake Watson
They reached a country mile for Blake Watson at slot 250, and the board is aghast. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
