Powerful DRAFTING FOR THETexans
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
B
ValueB+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the Texans for Mitchell: B. The Texans did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Adonai Mitchell fell into No. 59. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them.
The Hartman pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with running back the one that mattered most.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick42
Rnd2
Cooper DeJean
Value with a capital V on Cooper DeJean in pick No. 42, a genuine coup. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick59
Rnd2
Adonai Mitchell
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Adonai Mitchell in Round 2, Pick 27, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick86
Rnd3
Mike Sainristil
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Mike Sainristil adds a cornerback and leaves edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots untouched.
Pick123
Rnd4
Blake Fisher
Good price on Blake Fisher in slot 123, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
Pick127
Rnd4
Isaac Guerendo
No edge and no loss on Isaac Guerendo in No. 127; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick188
Rnd6
Marist Liufau
Somehow Marist Liufau was still sitting there in the 188th overall pick, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick247
Rnd7
Sam Hartman
The board had cheaper options than Sam Hartman at the Round 7 slot, and it noticed. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
