Powerful DRAFTING FOR THETexans
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
Grand theft in pick 236: the Texans steal McCaffrey and grade out a B-. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Luke McCaffrey got past him. The Texans do not have to explain a thing at Round 7, Pick 16. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
The Hunt pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. It is not that Hunt is a bad player; it is that the Texans had louder needs to answer first. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Jer'Zhan Newton
In the 23rd overall pick they get a load in the middle at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick59
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette at No. 59 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick86
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
A tidy little value on Khyree Jackson in the 86th pick, a step better than break-even. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick124
Rnd4
Marist Liufau
Marist Liufau at slot 124 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick128
Rnd4
Jalyx Hunt
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jalyx Hunt adds a S-EDGE and leaves edge rusher, offensive lineman and other spots untouched.
Pick236
Rnd7
Luke McCaffrey
They will replay Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 236 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick245
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
A reach on Joshua Cephus in the Round 7 slot; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick250
Rnd7
Blake Watson
They left a pile of value on the table to take Blake Watson this early at Round 7, Pick 30. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
