Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the Texans: B-.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Texans took Eyabi Okie-Anoma a full 61 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.

That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Cooper value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.

They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Brian Thomas Jr.
In the 23rd pick they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick59 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
Value with a capital V on Edgerrin Cooper in the Round 2 slot, a genuine coup. It fills a real need, too.
Pick86 Rnd3 Max Melton
They read the board right and Max Melton was the payoff at pick No. 86. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick123 Rnd4 Malik Mustapha
This one needs a full-page explanation: Malik Mustapha in Round 4, Pick 23, miles early. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick127 Rnd4 Theo Johnson
They did well to land Theo Johnson in No. 127, just ahead of his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick224 Rnd7 Eyabi Okie-Anoma
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Eyabi Okie-Anoma. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick238 Rnd7 Joshua Cephus
Value said wait; Joshua Cephus in Round 7, Pick 18 says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick247 Rnd7 Blake Watson
They reached a country mile for Blake Watson at the 247th overall pick, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
