Powerful DRAFTING FOR THETexans
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
B
ValueA-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Texans let Thomas Jr. fall and pounced. Final grade: B. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Texans were there to profit. Brian Thomas Jr., the No. 27 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 2 slot.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. They will answer for taking cornerback early while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots went begging. Hartman has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick42
Rnd2
Cooper DeJean
They read the board right and Cooper DeJean was the payoff at Round 2, Pick 10. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick59
Rnd2
Brian Thomas Jr.
Steal is underselling it; Brian Thomas Jr. at pick 59 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick86
Rnd3
Mike Sainristil
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Mike Sainristil at cornerback with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots open.
Pick123
Rnd4
Javon Baker
Javon Baker at the Round 4 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick127
Rnd4
Isaac Guerendo
Isaac Guerendo at No. 127 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick188
Rnd6
Ty'Ron Hopper
A tidy little value on Ty'Ron Hopper in the 188th pick, a step better than break-even. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick247
Rnd7
Sam Hartman
They paid a round early for Sam Hartman in the 247th overall pick, more than the board wanted. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
