Powerful DRAFTING FOR THETexans
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
B
ValueB
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Texans, and a B to prove it. You can draft well and still miss the point. The Texans did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to edge rusher, which was the need that mattered most. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
The Pegues reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The Mafah pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The roster is better shaped than it was, with running back chief among the fixes.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
A slide stopped in Round 1, Pick 25, with Tyler Warren worth more than the price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick58
Rnd2
Marcus Mbow
Marcus Mbow at the Round 2 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick79
Rnd3
Cameron Williams
They let Cameron Williams come to them and pounced at the 79th pick. The roster fit checks out.
Pick89
Rnd3
Savion Williams
A straight-up fair deal on Savion Williams at slot 89, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick166
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at pick No. 166 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick236
Rnd7
Phil Mafah
Phil Mafah slid further than he should have, and the 236th overall pick is lovely value for the running back. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick241
Rnd7
Desmond Watson
The board had Desmond Watson higher than No. 241, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
