Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Texans.

The war room fell hard for Julius Welschof, and it showed at the 248th overall pick: 92 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. No fireworks, but a solid B-.

They will answer for taking DT-EDGE early while interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots went begging. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

That Robinson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Troy Franklin
They paid sticker price for Troy Franklin in No. 23, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick59 Rnd2 Chop Robinson
Steal is underselling it; Chop Robinson at the 59th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick85 Rnd3 Maason Smith
Of all the spots to shop, they chose DT-EDGE. Maason Smith in the 85th overall pick leaves interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots for later.
Pick123 Rnd4 Malik Mustapha
They jumped the gun on Malik Mustapha, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick127 Rnd4 Jaheim Bell
A reach on Jaheim Bell in the Round 4 slot; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick164 Rnd5 Ty'Ron Hopper
They let Ty'Ron Hopper come to them and pounced at slot 164. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick239 Rnd7 Carson Steele
They talked themselves into Carson Steele at the 239th pick, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick248 Rnd7 Julius Welschof
They reached a country mile for Julius Welschof at No. 248, and the board is aghast. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
