Draft Grade — Browns
Overall
B
ValueB
NeedA-
TradesB+
FutureB-
The Browns did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B. They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Ethan Downs, 29 picks early at slot 255.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. Thornton Jr. at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In pick No. 2 they get a disruptor off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick33
Rnd2
Emeka Egbuka
Good price on Emeka Egbuka in pick 33, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick68
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and TreVeyon Henderson at the 68th pick is the proof. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick94
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
A slide stopped in No. 94, with Ozzy Trapilo worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick104
Rnd4
Zy Alexander
Zy Alexander at the Round 4 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick143
Rnd5
Tyler Shough
Tyler Shough in slot 143 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick179
Rnd6
JJ Pegues
They took JJ Pegues at par in slot 179, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick192
Rnd6
Jay Higgins
Jay Higgins at the Round 6 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick200
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They barely believed it either: Dont'e Thornton Jr. still on the board at the 200th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick216
Rnd6
Joshua Gray
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Joshua Gray in pick No. 216. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick255
Rnd7
Ethan Downs
Ethan Downs in the 255th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
