Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureD
The Texans let Baker fall and pounced. Final grade: B.

Call it larceny. Javon Baker sat on the board until slot 236, and the Texans did not need to be asked twice. Good, not great, and the B says as much.

Every board in the league had McLachlan lower, and that gap is the story. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.

The Texans indulged a want in Jackson while a need in edge rusher and quarterback stayed open.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Byron Murphy II
In the 23rd pick they get a disruptive interior force at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick41 Rnd2 Quinyon Mitchell
Value with a capital V on Quinyon Mitchell in No. 41, a genuine coup. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick57 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
Edgerrin Cooper at pick 57 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick59 Rnd2 Xavier Legette
Somehow Xavier Legette was still sitting there in pick No. 59, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick85 Rnd3 Trey Benson
Trey Benson slipping to slot 85 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick88 Rnd3 Blake Fisher
Blake Fisher at the Round 3 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
Pick124 Rnd4 Sione Vaki
They went early on Sione Vaki in the 124th overall pick, and the value did not follow. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick128 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Khyree Jackson at cornerback with edge rusher and quarterback open.
Pick161 Rnd5 Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray at pick No. 161 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick236 Rnd7 Javon Baker
Javon Baker at the Round 7 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick245 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
Value said wait; Tanner McLachlan in pick 245 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
