Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureD
The Texans worked the phones like thieves and earned a B.

The Texans clearly saw something nobody else did in Ty'Ron Hopper, taking him 55 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.

The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The Texans indulged a want in Sainristil while a need in edge rusher, offensive lineman and other spots stayed open.

On value alone, Rakestraw Jr. makes the weekend a net positive. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Jer'Zhan Newton
In slot 23 they get a run-stuffing presence up front, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick24 Rnd1 Byron Murphy II
In the 24th overall pick they get a disruptive interior force at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick59 Rnd2 Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in Round 2, Pick 27, plain and simple. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick86 Rnd3 Mike Sainristil
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Mike Sainristil in pick 86 leaves edge rusher, offensive lineman and other spots for later.
Pick87 Rnd3 Xavier Legette
Nice patience on Xavier Legette, who had no business lasting to No. 87. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick122 Rnd4 Ty'Ron Hopper
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Ty'Ron Hopper. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick126 Rnd4 Isaac Guerendo
Isaac Guerendo slid further than he should have, and Round 4, Pick 26 is lovely value for the running back. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick224 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
Tanner McLachlan at the 224th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick238 Rnd7 Tyler Owens
They let Tyler Owens come to them and pounced at the 238th pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick247 Rnd7 Trevin Wallace
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Trevin Wallace at slot 247. A need, and now a little less of one.
