Draft Grade — Browns
Overall
D+
ValueB-
NeedA-
TradesF
FutureB-
A franchise passer in Ward headlines a D+ weekend for the Browns. Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Browns, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. A D+ that will need time and luck to look better.
Cook has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Cam Ward gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The Alexander pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Cam Ward
In the 2nd pick they get a franchise quarterback. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick33
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori slipping to Round 2, Pick 1 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick67
Rnd3
Tre Harris
Nothing to complain about; Tre Harris went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94
Rnd3
Devin Neal
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Devin Neal in pick 94. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick114
Rnd4
Zy Alexander
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Zy Alexander at the Round 4 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick140
Rnd5
Aeneas Peebles
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Aeneas Peebles. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick174
Rnd5
Ajani Cornelius
Ajani Cornelius in slot 174 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick179
Rnd6
Connor Colby
A straight-up fair deal on Connor Colby at pick No. 179, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
Pick192
Rnd6
CJ West
CJ West at No. 192 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick200
Rnd6
Upton Stout
Upton Stout at Round 6, Pick 24 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick216
Rnd6
Donovan Edwards
Nice patience on Donovan Edwards, who had no business lasting to pick 216. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick247
Rnd7
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
A slide stopped in slot 247, with Jamon Dumas-Johnson worth more than the price. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick255
Rnd7
Brady Cook
They reached into another round for Brady Cook, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
