Draft Grade — Texans
Overall C+
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesC+ FutureD
The Texans landed square in the muddy middle: C+.

The Texans bet big and early on Ty'Ron Hopper, 49 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.

The Melton steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The Melton pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback and tight end.

For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Hit on Byron Murphy II and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Byron Murphy II
Nothing to complain about; Byron Murphy II went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick24 Rnd1 Chop Robinson
In No. 24 they get a double-digit-sack hope. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick59 Rnd2 Mike Sainristil
Mike Sainristil at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick86 Rnd3 Max Melton
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback and tight end to take Max Melton, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick87 Rnd3 Trey Benson
The board had cheaper options than Trey Benson at the 87th pick, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick124 Rnd4 Johnny Wilson
They paid sticker price for Johnny Wilson in pick No. 124, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick128 Rnd4 Ty'Ron Hopper
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Ty'Ron Hopper. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick236 Rnd7 Tyler Owens
Nice patience on Tyler Owens, who had no business lasting to Round 7, Pick 16. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick245 Rnd7 De'Corian Clark
De'Corian Clark at slot 245 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick250 Rnd7 KT Leveston
The board had KT Leveston higher than the 250th overall pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
