Draft Grade — Texans

FutureD
The Texans turned the phones into found money: B. The Julius Welschof selection is the head-turner. The Texans reached 101 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. No fireworks, but a solid B.
However the rest shakes out, Mitchell at that price is a win they earned. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In pick 23 they get a double-digit-sack hope at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick24
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
In the Round 1 slot they get a premier pass rusher, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick59
Rnd2
Quinyon Mitchell
Quinyon Mitchell at Round 2, Pick 27 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick85
Rnd3
Roman Wilson
Roman Wilson in the 85th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick87
Rnd3
Marist Liufau
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Marist Liufau. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick123
Rnd4
Malik Mustapha
A premium they did not need to pay, Malik Mustapha a notch or two before his time. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick127
Rnd4
Will Shipley
They paid sticker price for Will Shipley in slot 127, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick164
Rnd5
De'Corian Clark
De'Corian Clark at the 164th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick239
Rnd7
Julius Welschof
They left a pile of value on the table to take Julius Welschof this early at the 239th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick248
Rnd7
Tanner McLachlan
Tanner McLachlan at pick 248 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
