Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall D
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureA
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Patriots to a D.

The Kain Medrano pick is the one that will follow the Patriots into the fall. They took him 98 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Loveland at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The Mike Hilton pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.

Pick Analysis
Pick26 Rnd1 Jalon Walker
In pick 26 they get a three-down second-level presence. Need was not the driver here.
Pick38 Rnd2 Tyler Booker
No edge and no loss on Tyler Booker in slot 38; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick49 Rnd2 Colston Loveland
Colston Loveland at No. 49 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick50 Rnd2 Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks at Round 2, Pick 18 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick69 Rnd3 Maxwell Hairston
By-the-book stuff, Maxwell Hairston at the 69th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick77 Rnd3 Jack Bech
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jack Bech at the Round 3 slot is the proof. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick81 Rnd3 Charles Grant
Charles Grant in pick No. 81 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick88 Rnd3 Jared Ivey
They let Jared Ivey come to them and pounced at the 88th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick90 Rnd3 Nohl Williams
A wild overpay on Nohl Williams in Round 3, Pick 26, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick106 Rnd4 Kyle Williams
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kyle Williams this early at slot 106. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick108 Rnd4 Brashard Smith
Brashard Smith at pick 108 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick171 Rnd5 Jalen McLeod
Value said wait; Jalen McLeod in the Round 5 slot says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick179 Rnd6 Bhayshul Tuten
Taking Bhayshul Tuten in No. 179 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick192 Rnd6 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in the 192nd pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick200 Rnd6 Brady Cook
A big swing on Brady Cook at pick 200, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick220 Rnd7 Desmond Watson
A reach on Desmond Watson in the 220th pick; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick231 Rnd7 Nick Martin
Nick Martin in Round 7, Pick 15 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick238 Rnd7 Kain Medrano
They reached into another round for Kain Medrano, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick253 Rnd7 Malik Verdon
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Malik Verdon well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
