Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureB
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Patriots to a D-.

The Kain Medrano pick is the one that will follow the Patriots into the fall. They took him 115 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. Too much went sideways, and the D- is the honest tally.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Jones Jr. falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

Adding Dontayvion Wicks by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Josh Simmons
Josh Simmons at slot 23 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick38 Rnd2 Emeka Egbuka
A slide stopped in pick 38, with Emeka Egbuka worth more than the price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick39 Rnd2 Tyler Booker
No drama and no debate, Tyler Booker went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 7. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick41 Rnd2 Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori in the Round 2 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick45 Rnd2 Colston Loveland
Colston Loveland in the 45th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
Pick54 Rnd2 Maxwell Hairston
Maxwell Hairston at No. 54 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick69 Rnd3 Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins in pick No. 69 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick72 Rnd3 Mason Taylor
No edge and no loss on Mason Taylor in the 72nd pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick77 Rnd3 Isaiah Bond
They took Isaiah Bond at par in pick 77, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick106 Rnd4 Jalen McLeod
They reached into another round for Jalen McLeod, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick129 Rnd4 Brashard Smith
They robbed the room for Brashard Smith here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick136 Rnd4 Mello Dotson
They did well to land Mello Dotson in Round 4, Pick 34, just ahead of his grade. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick141 Rnd5 Oluwafemi Oladejo
A big swing on Oluwafemi Oladejo at the Round 5 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick144 Rnd5 Joshua Farmer
Joshua Farmer at the 144th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick167 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at Round 5, Pick 29 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick176 Rnd5 Emery Jones Jr.
Somehow Emery Jones Jr. was still sitting there in pick 176, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick198 Rnd6 Kain Medrano
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kain Medrano in pick No. 198, miles early. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick212 Rnd6 Francisco Mauigoa
Francisco Mauigoa at No. 212 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick217 Rnd7 Nick Martin
Nick Martin in slot 217 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick220 Rnd7 Brady Cook
Brady Cook at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick232 Rnd7 Jaylin Lane
They reached a country mile for Jaylin Lane at the 232nd overall pick, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick238 Rnd7 CJ West
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, CJ West in the 238th pick, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick239 Rnd7 Jonas Sanker
They will replay Jonas Sanker at No. 239 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
