The Patriots did not so much draft Kain Medrano as overpay for him, 111 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Campbell pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The veteran additions, Stefon Diggs chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.

Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
