Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureD
The Texans worked the phones like thieves and earned a B.

If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Texans, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.

The Texans indulged a want in Smith while a need in interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots stayed open. Reaching for Smith left real value on the table behind him. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Allen.

A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Dallas Turner
In the 23rd overall pick they get a disruptor off the edge, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick28 Rnd1 Chop Robinson
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get a premier pass rusher, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick58 Rnd2 Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette at the 58th pick is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick60 Rnd2 Maason Smith
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots open.
Pick90 Rnd3 Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson in pick No. 90 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick123 Rnd4 Braelon Allen
Somehow Braelon Allen was still sitting there in pick 123, and they pounced on premier running back value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick126 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
Good price on Khyree Jackson in slot 126, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick163 Rnd5 Malik Mustapha
Malik Mustapha is a better player than No. 163 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick239 Rnd7 Phil Jurkovec
A tidy bit of business in No. 239, where Phil Jurkovec graded well above the range. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick247 Rnd7 Blake Watson
They let Blake Watson come to them and pounced at the 247th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
