Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
The 49ers cashed the board's mistake on Edwards: B.

The rest of the league will want that one back. Donovan Edwards tumbling to the 49ers in No. 232 is a gift they did not have to think twice about. No fireworks, but a solid B.

Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The cost of the Trapilo reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Josh Simmons
In pick 11 they get a building block for the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick43 Rnd2 Derrick Harmon
The board had Derrick Harmon higher than No. 43, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick75 Rnd3 Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo at the 75th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick99 Rnd3 Smael Mondon Jr.
The board had cheaper options than Smael Mondon Jr. at the Round 3 slot, and it noticed. It fills a real need, too.
Pick112 Rnd4 Denzel Burke
Steal is underselling it; Denzel Burke at the 112th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick138 Rnd4 Jake Majors
They robbed the room for Jake Majors here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick139 Rnd4 Rylie Mills
Rylie Mills at Round 4, Pick 38 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick189 Rnd6 JJ Pegues
Nothing to complain about; JJ Pegues went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick228 Rnd7 Jake Briningstool
A reach for Jake Briningstool in the 228th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick232 Rnd7 Donovan Edwards
A running back of that caliber at pick No. 232 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick255 Rnd7 Kitan Crawford
They will replay Kitan Crawford at the Round 7 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A minor itch, scratched.
