Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall
A-
ValueA
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB
Satuala should have been long gone. The Chiefs pounced, and earned a A-. This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Faletau Satuala, the No. 105 name on the board, stolen at the 168th overall pick. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Carter Smith
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick39
Rnd2
Trey'Dez Green
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Trey'Dez Green in slot 39. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick63
Rnd2
Will Echoles
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Will Echoles in No. 63, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick73
Rnd3
Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa
They barely believed it either: Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa still on the board at pick No. 73. It fills a real need, too.
Pick95
Rnd3
Boubacar Traore
A edge rusher of that caliber at Round 3, Pick 31 is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick109
Rnd4
Jamari Sharpe
The board fumbled Jamari Sharpe all the way to the 109th overall pick, and they scooped it up. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick123
Rnd4
Evan Tengesdahl
Evan Tengesdahl in the 123rd pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick133
Rnd4
Ian Strong
Ian Strong at pick 133 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick168
Rnd5
Faletau Satuala
Faletau Satuala at the 168th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick177
Rnd5
J'Koby Williams
J'Koby Williams at Round 5, Pick 40 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick212
Rnd6
Mateen Ibirogba
Steal is underselling it; Mateen Ibirogba at pick No. 212 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick241
Rnd7
Tao Johnson
Tao Johnson at No. 241 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick256
Rnd7
Malachi Breland
Taking Malachi Breland in the 256th pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
