Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D
ValueB NeedB+ TradesF FutureB
The Cowboys found their guy under center in Ward: D.

When the story of this class is written, it opens with Emery Jones Jr. at Round 4, Pick 8, a reach of 77 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.

However the rest shakes out, Hampton at that price is a win they earned. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.

They have staked the next five years on Cam Ward, which is the only story that really matters here. Spending an early pick on edge rusher with cornerback and tight end open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.

That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and cornerback is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick7 Rnd1 Cam Ward
In Round 1, Pick 7 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick13 Rnd1 Tre Harris
In slot 13 they get a matchup problem out wide. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38 Rnd2 DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick44 Rnd2 Luther Burden III
Nice patience on Luther Burden III, who had no business lasting to pick 44. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick69 Rnd3 Nic Scourton
Value with a capital V on Nic Scourton in the 69th pick, a genuine coup. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick73 Rnd3 Dani Dennis-Sutton
Of all the spots to shop, they chose edge rusher. Dani Dennis-Sutton in No. 73 leaves cornerback and tight end for later.
Pick77 Rnd3 Kenneth Grant
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Kenneth Grant at slot 77. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick95 Rnd3 Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles in pick 95 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick105 Rnd4 Omarion Hampton
Circle this one: Omarion Hampton at No. 105 is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick109 Rnd4 Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. at the 109th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick113 Rnd4 Nicholas Singleton
A tidy bit of business in Round 4, Pick 12, where Nicholas Singleton graded well above the range. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick151 Rnd5 Kevin Winston Jr.
Value said wait; Kevin Winston Jr. in pick No. 151 says they were not listening. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick169 Rnd5 J.Michael Sturdivant
A wild overpay on J.Michael Sturdivant in the 169th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick170 Rnd5 Will Howard
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Will Howard. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick172 Rnd5 Deontae Lawson
Taking Deontae Lawson in Round 5, Pick 34 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick188 Rnd6 Harold Perkins Jr.
Harold Perkins Jr. in the Round 6 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick209 Rnd6 Raheim Sanders
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Raheim Sanders in pick 209, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
