Draft Grade — Broncos

Clark should have been long gone. The Broncos pounced, and earned a D. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Broncos did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
The Sainristil pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman and tight end. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Landing Clark that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
In pick 14 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. More want than need.
Pick49
Rnd2
J.J. McCarthy
Fair-plus on J.J. McCarthy, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick76
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson at pick No. 76 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick113
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
Value with a capital V on Matt Goncalves in slot 113, a genuine coup. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick124
Rnd4
James Williams
James Williams in the 124th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick136
Rnd4
Mike Sainristil
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Mike Sainristil adds a cornerback and leaves interior defensive lineman and tight end untouched.
Pick149
Rnd5
Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson at Round 5, Pick 13 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick151
Rnd5
Ainias Smith
They took Ainias Smith at par in the 151st pick, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick189
Rnd6
Theo Wease Jr.
A slide stopped in No. 189, with Theo Wease Jr. worth more than the price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick233
Rnd7
De'Corian Clark
De'Corian Clark at the 233rd overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
Pick243
Rnd7
Cody Schrader
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 243 with a little surplus value in Cody Schrader. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
