Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureA+
The Cowboys finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a D.

They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Anthony Lucas, 42 picks early at the Round 2 slot. It grades a D, and the process earned it.

They have staked the next five years on Dante Moore, which is the only story that really matters here. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They will answer for taking edge rusher early while tight end went begging.

A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick2 Rnd1 Dante Moore
In pick No. 2 they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick12 Rnd1 Caleb Downs
In the 12th overall pick they get an enforcer at safety, outstanding value to boot.
Pick16 Rnd1 Gennings Dunker
In No. 16 they get a building block for the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick20 Rnd1 Caleb Banks
In the 20th pick they get a double-digit-sack hope, even if it was a touch early. More want than need.
Pick33 Rnd2 Anthony Hill Jr.
No edge and no loss on Anthony Hill Jr. in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick44 Rnd2 Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles in pick 44 lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick56 Rnd2 Anthony Lucas
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 2, Pick 24 on Anthony Lucas with tight end unsolved.
Pick75 Rnd3 Julian Neal
Julian Neal in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick91 Rnd3 Jake Golday
Of all the spots to shop, they chose edge rusher. Jake Golday in slot 91 leaves tight end for later.
Pick103 Rnd4 Nicholas Singleton
Nicholas Singleton slid further than he should have, and No. 103 is lovely value for the running back. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick112 Rnd4 Akheem Mesidor
A surprising call. With tight end still to address, they spent the 112th pick on Akheem Mesidor, an edge rusher they were not short of.
Pick150 Rnd5 Chase Roberts
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Chase Roberts. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick177 Rnd5 Xavier Nwankpa
Xavier Nwankpa in pick No. 177 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick181 Rnd5 Lee Hunter
A big swing on Lee Hunter at pick 181, well ahead of any board in the building. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick221 Rnd7 Evan Stewart
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Evan Stewart in No. 221. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick225 Rnd7 Thaddeus Dixon
Nothing to complain about; Thaddeus Dixon went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
