Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
B+
ValueC+
NeedB-
TradesA+
FutureA
The Bears turned the phones into found money: B+. The Bears clearly saw something nobody else did in Jehiem Oatis, taking him 120 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The veteran additions, Ted Karras chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Josh Conerly Jr.
In the 21st pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
Pick48
Rnd2
Will Johnson
Nice patience on Will Johnson, who had no business lasting to No. 48. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick57
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
Tyler Booker at the Round 2 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick77
Rnd3
Kenneth Grant
Kenneth Grant in slot 77 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick81
Rnd3
Jake Majors
Jake Majors at Round 3, Pick 17 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick111
Rnd4
Sonny Styles
Circle this one: Sonny Styles at the 111th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick115
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
Steal is underselling it; Smael Mondon Jr. at slot 115 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick119
Rnd4
Deone Walker
Deone Walker in pick 119 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick120
Rnd4
Miles Frazier
They left a pile of value on the table to take Miles Frazier this early at the 120th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick121
Rnd4
Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. at the 121st overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick123
Rnd4
Donovan Jackson
A wild overpay on Donovan Jackson in pick No. 123, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick126
Rnd4
Tyler Warren
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Tyler Warren in the Round 4 slot, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick136
Rnd4
Benjamin Morrison
Benjamin Morrison at No. 136 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick138
Rnd4
J.Michael Sturdivant
J.Michael Sturdivant in Round 4, Pick 37 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick145
Rnd5
Barrett Carter
Value said wait; Barrett Carter in the Round 5 slot says they were not listening. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick151
Rnd5
Jonah Monheim
They reached a country mile for Jonah Monheim at pick No. 151, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
Pick154
Rnd5
Lathan Ransom
Lathan Ransom at the 154th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick157
Rnd5
Azareye'h Thomas
This one needs a full-page explanation: Azareye'h Thomas in Round 5, Pick 19, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick162
Rnd5
Keon Sabb
Somehow Keon Sabb was still sitting there in the 162nd overall pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick170
Rnd5
Kyren Lacy
Kyren Lacy at pick 170 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
Pick171
Rnd5
Gunnar Helm
They paid a round early for Gunnar Helm in slot 171, more than the board wanted. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick173
Rnd5
Le'Veon Moss
Le'Veon Moss in No. 173 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick229
Rnd7
Jaishawn Barham
A linebacker of that caliber at pick 229 is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick235
Rnd7
Julian Fleming
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Julian Fleming. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick236
Rnd7
Jay Toia
A real head-scratcher, Jay Toia in the 236th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick237
Rnd7
Phil Mafah
They will replay Phil Mafah at the Round 7 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick247
Rnd7
Donovan Edwards
The board fumbled Donovan Edwards all the way to No. 247, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick249
Rnd7
Jehiem Oatis
They reached into another round for Jehiem Oatis, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
