Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D
ValueC+ NeedB- TradesF FutureA+
The phones sank the Cowboys this weekend: D.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Vincent Anthony Jr. a full 65 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. The math is unkind, and the D follows.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Cowboys indulged a want in Haulcy while a need in tight end and interior defensive lineman stayed open.

That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Getting Neal where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Caleb Downs
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a two-high chess piece, outstanding value to boot.
Pick20 Rnd1 Anthony Hill Jr.
In the 20th overall pick they get a three-down second-level presence, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick21 Rnd1 Caleb Banks
In No. 21 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. More want than need.
Pick53 Rnd2 Carson Beck
They reached a country mile for Carson Beck at the Round 2 slot, and the board is aghast. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick60 Rnd2 A.J. Haulcy
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end and interior defensive lineman to take A.J. Haulcy, a safety that was not the priority.
Pick75 Rnd3 Kenyatta Jackson Jr.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose edge rusher. Kenyatta Jackson Jr. in pick 75 leaves tight end and interior defensive lineman for later.
Pick76 Rnd3 Jake Golday
A surprising call. With tight end and interior defensive lineman still to address, they spent Round 3, Pick 12 on Jake Golday, an edge rusher they were not short of.
Pick85 Rnd3 Charles Jagusah
Charles Jagusah at the Round 3 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick87 Rnd3 Malachi Fields
Malachi Fields in the 87th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick99 Rnd3 Julian Neal
Julian Neal in pick No. 99 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick112 Rnd4 Vincent Anthony Jr.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 112 on Vincent Anthony Jr. with tight end and interior defensive lineman unsolved.
Pick151 Rnd5 Le'Veon Moss
A big swing on Le'Veon Moss at slot 151, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick178 Rnd5 Xavier Nwankpa
Xavier Nwankpa at the 178th overall pick is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick215 Rnd6 Barion Brown
No edge and no loss on Barion Brown in pick 215; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick221 Rnd7 Da'Shawn Womack
A wild overpay on Da'Shawn Womack in the 221st overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick225 Rnd7 J. Michael Sturdivant
They paid sticker price for J. Michael Sturdivant in the 225th pick, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
