Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
B+
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesA+
FutureB+
Larceny in the Round 7 slot lands the Bears a B+, Singleton and all. You could see the war room lean forward. Nicholas Singleton at the 217th overall pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B+.
The Moore pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The Bears paired the rookies with proven help, Quinn Meinerz leading the way.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
Abdul Carter in pick 10 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick47
Rnd2
Derrick Harmon
A tidy bit of business in Round 2, Pick 15, where Derrick Harmon graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick77
Rnd3
Colston Loveland
You do not let a tight end like Colston Loveland reach the 77th pick and blink. They did not. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick96
Rnd3
Earnest Greene III
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Earnest Greene III. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick114
Rnd4
Emery Jones Jr.
They talked themselves into Emery Jones Jr. at slot 114, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick116
Rnd4
DJ Campbell
Value said wait; DJ Campbell in pick No. 116 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
Pick118
Rnd4
Trey Zuhn III
A big swing on Trey Zuhn III at the Round 4 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
Pick143
Rnd5
Trey Moore
Trey Moore at No. 143 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick147
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick 147, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick187
Rnd6
Sonny Styles
Somehow Sonny Styles was still sitting there in the 187th pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick190
Rnd6
Jordan Hancock
A straight-up fair deal on Jordan Hancock at No. 190, value and slot in agreement. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick197
Rnd6
Smael Mondon Jr.
Smael Mondon Jr. at slot 197 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick217
Rnd7
Nicholas Singleton
The board fumbled Nicholas Singleton all the way to the 217th overall pick, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick220
Rnd7
Jared Wilson
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jared Wilson in Round 7, Pick 4. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick226
Rnd7
Le'Veon Moss
They will replay Le'Veon Moss at the Round 7 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick230
Rnd7
Phil Mafah
Steal is underselling it; Phil Mafah at pick No. 230 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick233
Rnd7
Jake Briningstool
Jake Briningstool at No. 233 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
