Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Chiefs: B-. Nobody had AJ Barner this high, and it is not close. The Chiefs reached 55 spots to get him at the Round 4 slot. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The Watson pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Troy Franklin
Troy Franklin slid further than he should have, and the 33rd pick is lovely value for the wide receiver. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick41
Rnd2
Jordan Morgan
A tidy bit of business in Round 2, Pick 9, where Jordan Morgan graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick52
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
They paid up for T'Vondre Sweat at the 52nd overall pick when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick129
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
Nothing to complain about; Tommy Eichenberg went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Pick131
Rnd4
AJ Barner
They reached a country mile for AJ Barner at slot 131, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick168
Rnd5
Braelon Allen
Braelon Allen is a better player than pick 168 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick171
Rnd5
Jordan Jefferson
No edge and no loss on Jordan Jefferson in Round 5, Pick 35; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick175
Rnd5
Kenny Logan Jr.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kenny Logan Jr.. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick203
Rnd6
De'Corian Clark
Quietly one of the better values of the day, De'Corian Clark at the Round 6 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick207
Rnd6
Taulia Tagovailoa
Taulia Tagovailoa at the 207th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick217
Rnd6
Jalen Green
Jalen Green in slot 217 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick237
Rnd7
Blake Watson
Circle this one: Blake Watson at the 237th pick is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick250
Rnd7
Evan Anderson
A real head-scratcher, Evan Anderson in pick 250 is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
