FutureA
The Patriots checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. Nobody else had Torricelli Simpkins III anywhere near No. 220. The Patriots did, by 53 spots, and that gap is the whole story. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
They banked enough surplus on Warren to cover a lot of smaller sins. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Armand Membou
Fair-plus on Armand Membou, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick38
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Taking Tyler Warren in No. 38 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
Pick45
Rnd2
Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins at pick 45 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick69
Rnd3
Kyle Kennard
Kyle Kennard in slot 69 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick81
Rnd3
Deone Walker
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Deone Walker. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick106
Rnd4
Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson at Round 4, Pick 4 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick119
Rnd4
Hollin Pierce
Hollin Pierce in pick 119 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick144
Rnd5
Malachi Moore
A tidy little value on Malachi Moore in the Round 5 slot, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick149
Rnd5
Bhayshul Tuten
Bhayshul Tuten in the 149th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It fills a real need, too.
Pick171
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They went early on Dont'e Thornton Jr. in the 171st pick, and the value did not follow. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick220
Rnd7
Torricelli Simpkins III
They reached into another round for Torricelli Simpkins III, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick232
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
A premium they did not need to pay, Isaac TeSlaa a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
