Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall A-
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureA
Marks should have been long gone. The 49ers pounced, and earned a A-.

When a board-topper like Woody Marks slides to the Round 7 slot, you do not overthink it, and the 49ers did not. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A-.

The cost of the Sorrell reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The 49ers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.

The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.

In the end it comes back to Mykel Williams, and a haul good enough to build on right away.

Pick Analysis
Pick15 Rnd1 Mykel Williams
Mykel Williams in slot 15 is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick44 Rnd2 Kenneth Grant
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at the 44th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick75 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick100 Rnd3 Jake Majors
Jake Majors at pick 100 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick113 Rnd4 Anthony Belton
A straight-up fair deal on Anthony Belton at Round 4, Pick 11, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick138 Rnd4 Gunnar Helm
Gunnar Helm in No. 138 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
Pick147 Rnd5 Jaylin Noel
Steal is underselling it; Jaylin Noel at the 147th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick157 Rnd5 Jordan James
Somehow Jordan James was still sitting there in pick No. 157, and they pounced on premier running back value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick174 Rnd5 Tommi Hill
They will replay Tommi Hill at the Round 5 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick187 Rnd6 JJ Pegues
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and JJ Pegues at the 187th pick is the proof. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick226 Rnd7 Upton Stout
The board fumbled Upton Stout all the way to Round 7, Pick 10, and they scooped it up. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick230 Rnd7 Jay Higgins
Circle this one: Jay Higgins at pick 230 is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick235 Rnd7 Torricelli Simpkins III
A conviction pick on Torricelli Simpkins III at slot 235 that the board grades a round light. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick247 Rnd7 Barryn Sorrell
Barryn Sorrell in pick No. 247 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick249 Rnd7 Kevin Jennings
A reach on Kevin Jennings in the 249th overall pick; the board had better options right there. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick252 Rnd7 Woody Marks
Woody Marks in No. 252 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
