Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
The 49ers robbed the room for Johnson. Final grade: B.

Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Kaleb Johnson got past him. The 49ers do not have to explain a thing at Round 3, Pick 11. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.

They will need Watson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Will Campbell
No edge and no loss on Will Campbell in pick 11; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick43 Rnd2 Colston Loveland
You do not let a tight end like Colston Loveland reach the 43rd pick and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
Pick75 Rnd3 Kaleb Johnson
They will replay Kaleb Johnson at the Round 3 slot for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick100 Rnd3 Kevin Winston Jr.
By-the-book stuff, Kevin Winston Jr. at No. 100 squarely in line with his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick113 Rnd4 Zy Alexander
They did well to land Zy Alexander in pick No. 113, just ahead of his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick138 Rnd4 Oluwafemi Oladejo
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Oluwafemi Oladejo. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick147 Rnd5 Dillon Gabriel
Somehow Dillon Gabriel was still sitting there in the 147th overall pick, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick160 Rnd5 Jalen Rivers
Jalen Rivers at Round 5, Pick 22 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick227 Rnd7 Desmond Watson
The board had cheaper options than Desmond Watson at the Round 7 slot, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick249 Rnd7 Ja'Corey Brooks
Ja'Corey Brooks at the 249th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick252 Rnd7 Teddye Buchanan
They paid sticker price for Teddye Buchanan in the 252nd overall pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
