Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D
ValueC NeedB- TradesF FutureA+
A passer of the future in Mateer, and a D, for the Cowboys.

There is reaching, and then there is Princewill Umanmielen at Round 5, Pick 39. The Cowboys jumped the board by 94 and dared it to prove them wrong. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The whole projection now runs through John Mateer; hit there and everything else looks smarter. Spending an early pick on safety with tight end and interior defensive lineman open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. On value alone, Styles makes the weekend a net positive.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Caleb Downs
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a rangy last line of defense, and a steal at that. More want than need.
Pick20 Rnd1 John Mateer
In the 20th overall pick they get the arm they will build around, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick21 Rnd1 Caleb Banks
In pick 21 they get a problem off the edge. Need was not the driver here.
Pick53 Rnd2 Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles slipping to No. 53 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick74 Rnd3 Zakee Wheatley
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Zakee Wheatley in slot 74 leaves tight end and interior defensive lineman for later.
Pick75 Rnd3 Nicholas Singleton
They reached a country mile for Nicholas Singleton at the Round 3 slot, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick76 Rnd3 Malachi Fields
Malachi Fields in pick 76 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick85 Rnd3 Kenyatta Jackson Jr.
A want over a need in pick No. 85: Kenyatta Jackson Jr. adds an edge rusher while tight end and interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
Pick87 Rnd3 Jaishawn Barham
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jaishawn Barham in Round 3, Pick 23, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick99 Rnd3 Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end and interior defensive lineman to take Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, a safety that was not the priority.
Pick109 Rnd4 Tacario Davis
Tacario Davis in the 109th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick112 Rnd4 Chase Bisontis
A reach on Chase Bisontis in No. 112; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick150 Rnd5 Drew Allar
They paid a round early for Drew Allar in the Round 5 slot, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick177 Rnd5 Princewill Umanmielen
A real head-scratcher, Princewill Umanmielen in the 177th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick181 Rnd5 Duce Robinson
Duce Robinson at the 181st overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick221 Rnd7 Desmond Reid
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Desmond Reid well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick225 Rnd7 Barion Brown
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Barion Brown. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
