Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesB FutureB-
The steal of the weekend belongs to the 49ers and Mullings: B.

You could see the war room lean forward. Kalel Mullings at Round 5, Pick 33 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.

For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick Analysis
Pick22 Rnd1 Armand Membou
In pick No. 22 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick44 Rnd2 JT Tuimoloau
JT Tuimoloau in Round 2, Pick 12 is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick55 Rnd2 Alfred Collins
No drama and no debate, Alfred Collins went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick75 Rnd3 Deone Walker
A quiet steal in No. 75: Deone Walker for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick100 Rnd3 Jake Majors
By-the-book stuff, Jake Majors at the 100th pick squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick113 Rnd4 Dylan Fairchild
They read the board right and Dylan Fairchild was the payoff at the 113th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick138 Rnd4 Sai'vion Jones
They took Sai'vion Jones at par in slot 138, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick147 Rnd5 Hollin Pierce
They will replay Hollin Pierce at pick 147 for years; that is how good the value is. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick149 Rnd5 Savion Williams
They barely believed it either: Savion Williams still on the board at the 149th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick171 Rnd5 Kalel Mullings
Kalel Mullings at the 171st overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick187 Rnd6 Cobee Bryant
Cobee Bryant slipping to slot 187 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick226 Rnd7 Upton Stout
You do not let a safety like Upton Stout reach pick 226 and blink. They did not. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick230 Rnd7 Luke Lachey
Taking Luke Lachey in No. 230 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
Pick239 Rnd7 Karene Reid
The board fumbled Karene Reid all the way to the Round 7 slot, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick249 Rnd7 Clay Webb
A reasonable price with a little left over, Clay Webb in Round 7, Pick 33. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick252 Rnd7 Jaylin Smith
Jaylin Smith in pick No. 252 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
