Draft Grade — Texans

FutureD-
Mims should have been long gone. The Texans pounced, and earned a B. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Amarius Mims got past him. The Texans do not have to explain a thing at slot 58.
The Hartman pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In the Round 1 slot they get a bendy edge with upside, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick24
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
In the 24th pick they get a double-digit-sack hope at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick41
Rnd2
Terrion Arnold
Terrion Arnold in Round 2, Pick 9 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick58
Rnd2
Amarius Mims
They barely believed it either: Amarius Mims still on the board at pick 58. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick59
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
The board had Edgerrin Cooper higher than pick No. 59, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick86
Rnd3
DeWayne Carter
A reach on DeWayne Carter in slot 86; the board had better options right there. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick87
Rnd3
Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette at No. 87 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick122
Rnd4
Renardo Green
Nice patience on Renardo Green, who had no business lasting to the 122nd overall pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick126
Rnd4
Isaac Guerendo
They read the board right and Isaac Guerendo was the payoff at the 126th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick224
Rnd7
Tanner McLachlan
They took Tanner McLachlan at par in pick 224, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick238
Rnd7
Tyler Owens
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tyler Owens at slot 238. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick247
Rnd7
Sam Hartman
They talked themselves into Sam Hartman at No. 247, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
