Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B
ValueB+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureD-
Nobody dealt better than the Texans this weekend: B.

The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Rome Odunze, slot 41, roughly 32 picks past where he belonged.

The Watson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. They will answer for taking safety early while edge rusher and quarterback went begging.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Byron Murphy II
In pick 23 they get a wrecking ball inside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick24 Rnd1 Quinyon Mitchell
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a press-man option on the boundary. More want than need.
Pick41 Rnd2 Rome Odunze
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick No. 41 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick58 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
They let Edgerrin Cooper come to them and pounced at slot 58. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick59 Rnd2 Payton Wilson
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Payton Wilson at the Round 2 slot is the proof. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick86 Rnd3 Calen Bullock
Calen Bullock in the 86th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick87 Rnd3 Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni at No. 87 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick124 Rnd4 Renardo Green
A curious use of pick 124. Edge rusher and quarterback needed the pick; a safety in Renardo Green did not.
Pick128 Rnd4 Theo Johnson
A premium they did not need to pay, Theo Johnson a notch or two before his time. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick236 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tanner McLachlan in Round 7, Pick 16. It fills a real need, too.
Pick245 Rnd7 Blake Watson
Blake Watson at the 245th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick250 Rnd7 De'Corian Clark
A wild overpay on De'Corian Clark in pick No. 250, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
