Draft Grade — Texans
Overall D-
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureD-
The Texans let Wilson fall and pounced. Final grade: D-.

There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Texans started one anyway for Taulia Tagovailoa, 31 picks ahead of schedule.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They will answer for taking cornerback early while offensive lineman went begging.

They will regret leaving offensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. The Wilson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.

The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Dallas Turner
In No. 23 they get a double-digit-sack hope at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick24 Rnd1 Chop Robinson
In pick 24 they get a problem off the edge at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick41 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
No edge and no loss on Edgerrin Cooper in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick58 Rnd2 T'Vondre Sweat
Nice patience on T'Vondre Sweat, who had no business lasting to slot 58. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick59 Rnd2 Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson in slot 59 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
Pick86 Rnd3 Roman Wilson
You do not let a wide receiver like Roman Wilson reach Round 3, Pick 23 and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick87 Rnd3 Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson in pick 87 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick124 Rnd4 Josh Newton
They bypassed pressing needs at offensive lineman to take Josh Newton, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick128 Rnd4 Malik Mustapha
A real head-scratcher, Malik Mustapha in the 128th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick236 Rnd7 Tip Reiman
Value with a capital V on Tip Reiman in pick No. 236, a genuine coup. It fills a real need, too.
Pick245 Rnd7 Taulia Tagovailoa
They reached into another round for Taulia Tagovailoa, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick250 Rnd7 Blake Watson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Blake Watson well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
