Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall D-
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesF FutureB-
The Patriots got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-.

The Patriots treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the 253rd pick on Noah Daniels a full 137 spots early. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Trapilo falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Abdul Carter
Abdul Carter in the Round 1 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick38 Rnd2 Nick Emmanwori
They will replay Nick Emmanwori at No. 38 for years; that is how good the value is. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick69 Rnd3 Jaylin Noel
They reached a country mile for Jaylin Noel at pick No. 69, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick70 Rnd3 Maxwell Hairston
No drama and no debate, Maxwell Hairston went about where he belonged in pick 70. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick77 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Donovan Jackson. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick88 Rnd3 Mason Taylor
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Mason Taylor in Round 3, Pick 24. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick105 Rnd4 Ozzy Trapilo
Circle this one: Ozzy Trapilo at Round 4, Pick 4 is a fall that decides a draft. The roster fit checks out.
Pick128 Rnd4 Brashard Smith
Brashard Smith at the 128th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It fills a real need, too.
Pick136 Rnd4 Jackson Slater
A straight-up fair deal on Jackson Slater at pick 136, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick145 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Dont'e Thornton Jr.. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick176 Rnd5 CJ West
A real head-scratcher, CJ West in No. 176 is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick219 Rnd7 Kain Medrano
Value said wait; Kain Medrano in slot 219 says they were not listening. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick222 Rnd7 Francisco Mauigoa
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Francisco Mauigoa well ahead of where he belonged. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick237 Rnd7 Jackson Hawes
They paid up for Jackson Hawes at pick No. 237 when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick240 Rnd7 Jacobe Covington
Jacobe Covington at pick No. 240 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick244 Rnd7 Isaac TeSlaa
Taking Isaac TeSlaa in the 244th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick253 Rnd7 Noah Daniels
A wild overpay on Noah Daniels in pick 253, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
