Draft Grade — Texans
Overall D+
ValueB NeedB+ TradesF FutureD-
The phones sank the Texans this weekend: D+.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Texans did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Hard to defend, and the D+ reflects that.

They are betting McLachlan proves the room right and everyone else wrong. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake. On value alone, Watson makes the weekend a net positive.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Dallas Turner
In the 23rd overall pick they get a premier pass rusher at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick24 Rnd1 Jared Verse
In the 24th pick they get a disruptor off the edge, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick27 Rnd1 JC Latham
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front, outstanding value to boot.
Pick59 Rnd2 Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson at pick 59 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick85 Rnd3 Braden Fiske
Braden Fiske in Round 3, Pick 22 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick87 Rnd3 Roman Wilson
Fair-plus on Roman Wilson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick123 Rnd4 Malik Mustapha
A reach for Malik Mustapha in pick No. 123; a little patience would have been rewarded. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick127 Rnd4 Jaheim Bell
They went early on Jaheim Bell in No. 127, and the value did not follow. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick164 Rnd5 Grayson Murphy
No edge and no loss on Grayson Murphy in Round 5, Pick 28; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick239 Rnd7 Blake Watson
Blake Watson slipping to the 239th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick248 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
A big swing on Tanner McLachlan at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
