Draft Grade — Lions
Overall B-
ValueB NeedB- TradesB- FutureB-
Cowing should have been long gone. The Lions pounced, and earned a B-.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Lions were there to profit. Jacob Cowing, the No. 174 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 6, Pick 32. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

With cornerback, safety and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on defensive back is the choice that costs them. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick Analysis
Pick29 Rnd1 Cooper DeJean
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cooper DeJean adds a defensive back and leaves cornerback, safety and other spots untouched.
Pick61 Rnd2 Mekhi Wingo
Mekhi Wingo in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick88 Rnd3 Tory Horton
No edge and no loss on Tory Horton in pick No. 88; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick92 Rnd3 Max Melton
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went defensive back with Max Melton while clear needs at cornerback, safety and other spots sat open.
Pick124 Rnd4 Javion Cohen
Value with a capital V on Javion Cohen in the 124th overall pick, a genuine coup. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick151 Rnd5 Gabriel Murphy
They took Gabriel Murphy at par in slot 151, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick166 Rnd5 Bryce Foster
Bryce Foster in the 166th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick192 Rnd6 Jestin Jacobs
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jestin Jacobs at Round 6, Pick 17. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick207 Rnd6 Jacob Cowing
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Jacob Cowing in the 207th pick, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick250 Rnd7 Will Rogers
No drama and no debate, Will Rogers went about where he belonged in No. 250. The roster fit checks out.
