Draft Grade — Cardinals

FutureC-
The Cardinals overdrafted Washington and paid the price. Grade: F. It is the swing that defines the weekend: Tahj Washington in Round 7, Pick 10, a good 132 spots before the room expected him. A F, plain and simple.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They banked enough surplus on Baker to cover a lot of smaller sins. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In the 26th pick they get a premier pass rusher at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick27
Rnd1
Cooper DeJean
In the 27th overall pick they get a ballhawk on the outside, outstanding value to boot. More want than need.
Pick35
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton in slot 35 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick45
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
They took Jackson Powers-Johnson at par in pick No. 45, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick52
Rnd2
Ladd McConkey
Steal is underselling it; Ladd McConkey at pick 52 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick58
Rnd2
Roman Wilson
A big swing on Roman Wilson at Round 2, Pick 26, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick66
Rnd3
T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat in pick No. 66 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick71
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson in pick 71 is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick72
Rnd3
Mike Sainristil
They liked Mike Sainristil enough to skip the value, taking him in the 72nd overall pick. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick84
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
Christian Mahogany at No. 84 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick85
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
Good price on Cooper Beebe in the Round 3 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick123
Rnd4
Jordan Travis
Jordan Travis in the 123rd pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick126
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson at slot 126 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick129
Rnd4
MarShawn Lloyd
MarShawn Lloyd at Round 4, Pick 29 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick131
Rnd4
Chau Smith-Wade
Chau Smith-Wade at the 131st overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick133
Rnd4
Austin Booker
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Austin Booker well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick136
Rnd4
Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni in the Round 4 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick140
Rnd5
Ben Sinnott
By-the-book stuff, Ben Sinnott at Round 5, Pick 4 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Pick147
Rnd5
Eric Watts
Eric Watts at No. 147 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick152
Rnd5
Zion Tupuola-Fetui
Zion Tupuola-Fetui at slot 152 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick160
Rnd5
Cody Schrader
No edge and no loss on Cody Schrader in the 160th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick187
Rnd6
Nathaniel Watson
Nathaniel Watson in pick No. 187 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick188
Rnd6
Delmar Glaze
They let Delmar Glaze come to them and pounced at pick No. 188. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick225
Rnd7
Brevyn Spann-Ford
No drama and no debate, Brevyn Spann-Ford went about where he belonged in the 225th pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick227
Rnd7
Javon Baker
Javon Baker at No. 227 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick229
Rnd7
Walter Rouse
They talked themselves into Walter Rouse at pick 229, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick230
Rnd7
Tahj Washington
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tahj Washington in slot 230, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick239
Rnd7
Carter Bradley
They left a pile of value on the table to take Carter Bradley this early at Round 7, Pick 19. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick255
Rnd7
Myles Cole
A straight-up fair deal on Myles Cole at the 255th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick256
Rnd7
Ryan Flournoy
Ryan Flournoy at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
