FutureD
The Bills lost the trade table, and the D tells the story. You can hear the double-takes from here. The Bills took Demani Richardson at pick No. 196, roughly 106 spots before his name belonged.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
The Bills paired the rookies with proven help, Adam Trautman leading the way.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In Round 1, Pick 16 they get a double-digit-sack hope. A real need, handled.
Pick26
Rnd1
Jared Verse
In the 26th overall pick they get juice off the edge at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick28
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In slot 28 they get a weapon on the perimeter, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick53
Rnd2
Adonai Mitchell
Adonai Mitchell in pick No. 53 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick99
Rnd3
Tyleik Williams
Tyleik Williams at No. 99 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick118
Rnd4
Troy Fautanu
They took Troy Fautanu at par in the 118th pick, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick121
Rnd4
Spencer Rattler
Spencer Rattler at slot 121 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Pick146
Rnd5
Curtis Jacobs
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Curtis Jacobs. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick155
Rnd5
Gabe Hall
This one needs a full-page explanation: Gabe Hall in No. 155, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick158
Rnd5
Raheim Sanders
They left a pile of value on the table to take Raheim Sanders this early at pick 158. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick191
Rnd6
Jaden Hicks
Jaden Hicks in the 191st pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. The roster fit checks out.
Pick196
Rnd6
Demani Richardson
Demani Richardson at Round 6, Pick 21 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick204
Rnd6
Chau Smith-Wade
A premium they did not need to pay, Chau Smith-Wade a notch or two before his time. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick239
Rnd7
Hayden Hatten
A reach for Hayden Hatten in the Round 7 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
