Draft Grade — Cardinals

The Cardinals bled value on every deal, hence the D-. The Cardinals did not so much draft Edefuan Ulofoshio as overpay for him, 90 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They banked enough surplus on McCarthy to cover a lot of smaller sins. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
The Cardinals paired the rookies with proven help, Fletcher Cox leading the way.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In the Round 1 slot they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
Chop Robinson
A tidy bit of business in Round 2, Pick 3, where Chop Robinson graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick42
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton at pick No. 42 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick52
Rnd2
Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at No. 52 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick66
Rnd3
Xavier Worthy
Nice patience on Xavier Worthy, who had no business lasting to pick 66. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick71
Rnd3
Braden Fiske
They robbed the room for Braden Fiske here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
Pick90
Rnd3
Kingsley Suamataia
They will replay Kingsley Suamataia at the 90th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick91
Rnd3
Renardo Green
A wild overpay on Renardo Green in pick 91, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick96
Rnd3
DJ James
DJ James is a better player than the Round 3 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick97
Rnd3
J.J. McCarthy
A quarterback of that caliber at No. 97 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick100
Rnd3
Mekhi Wingo
Mekhi Wingo at Round 3, Pick 37 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick105
Rnd4
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at pick No. 105 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick109
Rnd4
Devontez Walker
Devontez Walker in the 109th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick117
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
They paid a round early for Ben Sinnott in slot 117, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick122
Rnd4
Cody Schrader
Cody Schrader at No. 122 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
Pick123
Rnd4
Jalyx Hunt
They reached into another round for Jalyx Hunt, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster logic is harder to follow.
Pick134
Rnd4
Isaac Guerendo
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Isaac Guerendo in slot 134, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick137
Rnd5
Cole Bishop
Taking Cole Bishop in the 137th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick146
Rnd5
Steele Chambers
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Steele Chambers. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick152
Rnd5
Jarrian Jones
Fair-plus on Jarrian Jones, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick153
Rnd5
Jacob Cowing
A quiet steal in Round 5, Pick 17: Jacob Cowing for less than the market said. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick154
Rnd5
Javon Foster
Somehow Javon Foster was still sitting there in the 154th pick, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick156
Rnd5
Roger Rosengarten
Roger Rosengarten slipping to pick 156 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick160
Rnd5
Edefuan Ulofoshio
Value said wait; Edefuan Ulofoshio in slot 160 says they were not listening. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick161
Rnd5
Trevor Keegan
Trevor Keegan in pick No. 161 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick164
Rnd5
Eric Watts
Eric Watts in the 164th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick171
Rnd5
Braiden McGregor
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Braiden McGregor. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick177
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
A real head-scratcher, Gabe Hall in the Round 6 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick179
Rnd6
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint
A big swing on Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at the 179th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick190
Rnd6
Khristian Boyd
Khristian Boyd in Round 6, Pick 15 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick191
Rnd6
Caedan Wallace
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Caedan Wallace in pick 191. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick205
Rnd6
Zion Tupuola-Fetui
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Zion Tupuola-Fetui at the Round 6 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick212
Rnd6
Kimani Vidal
Kimani Vidal at the 212th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick217
Rnd6
Logan Lee
They reached a country mile for Logan Lee at Round 6, Pick 42, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick222
Rnd7
Javontae Jean-Baptiste
A straight-up fair deal on Javontae Jean-Baptiste at pick No. 222, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick224
Rnd7
Andrew Coker
They left a pile of value on the table to take Andrew Coker this early at slot 224. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick234
Rnd7
Marcellas Dial
Marcellas Dial at the 234th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick241
Rnd7
Frank Gore Jr.
They let Frank Gore Jr. come to them and pounced at No. 241. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick248
Rnd7
Andrew Raym
They read the board right and Andrew Raym was the payoff at slot 248. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
