The steal of the weekend belongs to the Bengals and Devonshire: B-. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how M.J. Devonshire got past him. The Bengals do not have to explain a thing at pick 238. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. Byrd has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
Jordan Morgan
In pick 32 they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick49
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat in Round 2, Pick 17 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick69
Rnd3
Christian Haynes
Christian Haynes at the 69th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick80
Rnd3
Michael Hall Jr.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Michael Hall Jr.. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick97
Rnd3
Blake Corum
A slide stopped in slot 97, with Blake Corum worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick105
Rnd4
Jalen McMillan
Jalen McMillan at pick No. 105 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick115
Rnd4
Zak Zinter
The board had Zak Zinter higher than No. 115, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick129
Rnd4
Josh Newton
A reasonable price with a little left over, Josh Newton in the Round 4 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick149
Rnd5
Dallin Holker
Dallin Holker in pick No. 149 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick194
Rnd6
Trente Jones
Trente Jones at the 194th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Pick214
Rnd6
Isaiah Williams
They robbed the room for Isaiah Williams here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick224
Rnd7
Tatum Bethune
They took Tatum Bethune at par in slot 224, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick237
Rnd7
Solomon Byrd
Solomon Byrd at pick 237 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick238
Rnd7
M.J. Devonshire
You do not let a cornerback like M.J. Devonshire reach the Round 7 slot and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick252
Rnd7
Nathan Thomas
They barely believed it either: Nathan Thomas still on the board at Round 7, Pick 32. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
