Good, not great, for the Steelers: B-. Priorities are a choice, and the Steelers made a strange one, taking Kingsley Suamataia at offensive lineman in pick 84 with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots crying out for the pick instead.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. The Hopper pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Every board in the league had Gray lower, and that gap is the story.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Graham Barton
In the 25th overall pick they get a building block for the line at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick51
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette in No. 51 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick84
Rnd3
Kingsley Suamataia
A surprising call. With quarterback, edge rusher and other spots still to address, they spent Round 3, Pick 20 on Kingsley Suamataia, an offensive lineman they were not short of.
Pick88
Rnd3
Andru Phillips
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Andru Phillips at slot 88 is the proof. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick91
Rnd3
Cole Bishop
Cole Bishop at the 91st overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick98
Rnd3
Cedric Gray
They reached a country mile for Cedric Gray at pick 98, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick119
Rnd4
Leonard Taylor III
Leonard Taylor III at the Round 4 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick178
Rnd6
Tahj Washington
Tahj Washington at the 178th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick195
Rnd6
Ty'Ron Hopper
Ty'Ron Hopper in pick No. 195 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
