Draft Grade — Buccaneers
Overall B
ValueA- NeedB- TradesB FutureB-
Burnip should have been long gone. The Buccaneers pounced, and earned a B.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Buccaneers were there to profit. James Burnip, the No. 168 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 235.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. It is not that Paul Jr. is a bad player; it is that the Buccaneers had louder needs to answer first. Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Mike Green
In the 21st overall pick they get juice off the edge. A real need, handled.
Pick58 Rnd2 Jihaad Campbell
The board fumbled Jihaad Campbell all the way to the 58th pick, and they scooped it up. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick84 Rnd3 Xavier Watts
They barely believed it either: Xavier Watts still on the board at No. 84. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick91 Rnd3 TreVeyon Henderson
A top-tier running back at a bargain, TreVeyon Henderson in the Round 3 slot, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick119 Rnd4 Tez Johnson
They will replay Tez Johnson at slot 119 for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
Pick126 Rnd4 Mason Taylor
Circle this one: Mason Taylor at pick No. 126 is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick135 Rnd4 Chris Paul Jr.
A curious use of Round 4, Pick 34. Interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Chris Paul Jr. did not.
Pick156 Rnd5 Jake Majors
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick 156 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick223 Rnd7 Jordan Hancock
Jordan Hancock in Round 7, Pick 7 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick235 Rnd7 James Burnip
Taking James Burnip in slot 235 is close to grand larceny; a specialist that good had no business lasting this long. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
