Grand theft in slot 196: the Packers steal Mondon Jr. and grade out a B-.

You build a draft on nights like this. Smael Mondon Jr. had no business being available in pick 196, and the Packers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. No fireworks, but a solid B-.

Every board in the league had Covington lower, and that gap is the story. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Matthew Golden
In slot 23 they get a home-run threat at receiver, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick54 Rnd2 Tyleik Williams
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 2 slot with a little surplus value in Tyleik Williams. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick87 Rnd3 Charles Grant
Charles Grant in No. 87 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick122 Rnd4 Jack Bech
Jack Bech at the 122nd overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
Pick158 Rnd5 Chris Paul Jr.
Somehow Chris Paul Jr. was still sitting there in Round 5, Pick 21, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick196 Rnd6 Smael Mondon Jr.
Taking Smael Mondon Jr. in pick 196 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick237 Rnd7 Jonah Monheim
Jonah Monheim at the 237th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick250 Rnd7 Jacobe Covington
A wild overpay on Jacobe Covington in pick No. 250, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
