Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall B-
ValueB NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Steelers, and a B- to prove it.

It is the swing that defines the weekend: Cole Payton in the Round 5 slot, a good 77 spots before the room expected him.

That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes. Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Sonny Styles
In pick No. 21 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick53 Rnd2 Gennings Dunker
Nothing to complain about; Gennings Dunker went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick76 Rnd3 Omar Cooper Jr.
Steal is underselling it; Omar Cooper Jr. at No. 76 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick85 Rnd3 Eli Stowers
Taking Eli Stowers in Round 3, Pick 21 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
Pick99 Rnd3 Michael Taaffe
Michael Taaffe in the 99th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick121 Rnd4 Bryce Lance
They paid sticker price for Bryce Lance in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick135 Rnd4 Taylen Green
Taylen Green in the Round 4 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick161 Rnd5 Cole Payton
They reached a country mile for Cole Payton at the 161st overall pick, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick214 Rnd6 Aamil Wagner
They robbed the room for Aamil Wagner here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick216 Rnd6 Bryce Boettcher
Bryce Boettcher at pick No. 216 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick224 Rnd7 TJ Hall
A tidy little value on TJ Hall in No. 224, a step better than break-even. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick237 Rnd7 Logan Taylor
They talked themselves into Logan Taylor at slot 237, and the board did not agree. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
