Draft Grade — Dolphins
Overall C+
ValueC+ NeedB TradesD+ FutureB-
A mixed bag for the Dolphins, and a C+ to match.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the Dolphins would have aced it. Malachi Lawrence at the Round 4 slot is 26 spots clear of where he belonged.

The Dolphins indulged a want in Smith while a need in interior defensive lineman and linebacker stayed open. Aguilar at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.

In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Chris Bell
In slot 23 they get a go-to option on the outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick43 Rnd2 Dillon Thieneman
Dillon Thieneman in the 43rd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick75 Rnd3 Keionte Scott
Good price on Keionte Scott in the Round 3 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick87 Rnd3 Genesis Smith
A curious use of pick 87. Interior defensive lineman and linebacker needed the pick; a safety in Genesis Smith did not.
Pick90 Rnd3 Kaytron Allen
Kaytron Allen in pick No. 90 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The roster fit checks out.
Pick98 Rnd3 Jack Endries
A straight-up fair deal on Jack Endries at Round 3, Pick 34, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick111 Rnd4 Malachi Lawrence
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Malachi Lawrence. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick137 Rnd4 Max Iheanachor
They took Max Iheanachor at par in the 137th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick149 Rnd5 DJ Campbell
A reach on DJ Campbell in the Round 5 slot; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick227 Rnd7 Joey Aguilar
They let Joey Aguilar come to them and pounced at slot 227. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
