Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the Texans for Echoles: B.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Texans were there to profit. Will Echoles, the No. 17 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick 59.

Reaching for Becker left real value on the table behind him. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Suntarine Perkins
In slot 28 they get juice off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick38 Rnd2 Charlie Becker
They reached into another round for Charlie Becker, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick59 Rnd2 Will Echoles
They will replay Will Echoles at the 59th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick69 Rnd3 Nate Frazier
Nate Frazier in the 69th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick106 Rnd4 Greg Johnson
They took Greg Johnson at par in the Round 4 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Pick128 Rnd4 Corey Myrick
Corey Myrick at No. 128 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick165 Rnd5 Dylan Lonergan
Dylan Lonergan in pick No. 165 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick243 Rnd7 Jay'Vion Cole
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jay'Vion Cole at pick 243 is the proof. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick244 Rnd7 Xavier Chaplin
Xavier Chaplin at the 244th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
