Draft Grade — Vikings

The Vikings let Baugh fall into their laps, and walked away with a B-.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Vikings watched Jadan Baugh slide 26 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.

Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. If Luckie pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.

With quarterback and edge rusher unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Will Echoles
In No. 30 they get a wrecking ball inside, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick62 Rnd2 Jadan Baugh
Taking Jadan Baugh in pick 62 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick70 Rnd3 Kade Pieper
Kade Pieper at the 70th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick94 Rnd3 Peyton Bowen
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback and edge rusher to take Peyton Bowen, a safety that was not the priority.
Pick156 Rnd5 Brandon Inniss
A clean, defensible pick in slot 156 with a little surplus value in Brandon Inniss. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick157 Rnd5 Kam Robinson
Kam Robinson is a better player than Round 5, Pick 20 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
Pick167 Rnd5 Nicholas Rodriguez
Nicholas Rodriguez at pick No. 167 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
Pick186 Rnd6 Xavier Lucas
Circle this one: Xavier Lucas at the Round 6 slot is a fall that decides a draft. Not a spot anyone had flagged, which makes it a head-scratcher.
Pick195 Rnd6 Lawson Luckie
They reached into another round for Lawson Luckie, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick212 Rnd6 King Mack
King Mack in the 212th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick231 Rnd7 Payton Pierce
They let Payton Pierce come to them and pounced at slot 231. The roster logic is harder to follow.
