Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall D
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureA+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Patriots to a D.

They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Kain Medrano, 102 picks early at pick 233. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end.

The Williams pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at tight end. Golden falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 Jalon Walker
In No. 25 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick38 Rnd2 Matthew Golden
Taking Matthew Golden in slot 38 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick49 Rnd2 Malaki Starks
They barely believed it either: Malaki Starks still on the board at the Round 2 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick69 Rnd3 Azareye'h Thomas
They read the board right and Azareye'h Thomas was the payoff at the 69th pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick77 Rnd3 Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo at pick No. 77 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick81 Rnd3 Jared Ivey
Jared Ivey in the 81st overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick88 Rnd3 Darius Alexander
A straight-up fair deal on Darius Alexander at the 88th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick89 Rnd3 Emery Jones Jr.
Value said wait; Emery Jones Jr. in pick 89 says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick104 Rnd4 Nohl Williams
A surprising call. With tight end still to address, they spent slot 104 on Nohl Williams, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick106 Rnd4 Brashard Smith
Brashard Smith in pick No. 106 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick129 Rnd4 Antwaun Powell-Ryland
They reached into another round for Antwaun Powell-Ryland, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick136 Rnd4 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at Round 4, Pick 34 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick144 Rnd5 Bhayshul Tuten
They liked Bhayshul Tuten enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 5 slot. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick179 Rnd6 Jalen McLeod
Jalen McLeod at the 179th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick217 Rnd7 Brady Cook
They talked themselves into Brady Cook at Round 7, Pick 1, and the board did not agree. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick220 Rnd7 Nick Martin
A real head-scratcher, Nick Martin in No. 220 is miles ahead of his ranking. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick233 Rnd7 Kain Medrano
A big swing on Kain Medrano at the 233rd overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick236 Rnd7 Drew Kendall
Drew Kendall at pick No. 236 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick238 Rnd7 Jermari Harris
They did well to land Jermari Harris in the 238th pick, just ahead of his grade. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick240 Rnd7 Desmond Watson
Desmond Watson slipping to slot 240 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
